Editor’s Note
Eighteen months. January 2025 to June 2026. 134% MAU growth. 19.6-point CEI gain. 70% ARPU growth. CPR from 9.3% to 19.2%. The numbers say the same thing in every metric: this category grew, and the growth was structural. The users who stayed got more engaged. The platforms that scaled got more revenue per paying user. The product features that mattered, memory, voice, persona customization, image generation, produced measurable, documented retention and engagement improvements. The AI Girlfriends Industry Index closes its inaugural 18-month series with a dataset that makes four arguments no longer deniable.

Four structural arguments emerge from the 18-month dataset.
1. The category is large and growing at rate. 33.2 million monthly active users in June 2026 is not a niche. It is a mass-market category. For reference, 33 million MAU is larger than most single-country dating apps and comparable to several publicly listed social platforms. The 134% MAU growth over 18 months, maintained without a measurable novelty pullback, describes structural adoption rather than trend-cycling.
2. Engagement deepened as the category grew. A 19.6-point CEI gain over 18 months, concurrent with 134% MAU growth, means the category did not trade quality for quantity. The new users who joined in 2025 and 2026 engaged as deeply as, or more deeply than, the early adopters who joined in 2024. ADCL growing from 18.4 minutes (February 2025 baseline) to 25.8 minutes (June 2026) is the session-level confirmation: the average conversation that used to last 18 minutes now lasts 26.
3. Monetisation scaled with both breadth and depth. CPR grew from 9.3% to 19.2%, more than double the paying user share over 18 months. ARPU grew 70%. Both moving together means the category expanded its paying base and increased revenue per paying user simultaneously. That is the most favorable monetisation geometry in consumer subscription products: the rising tide lifts both the conversion rate and the average value of each converted user.
4. Features drove documented outcomes. Memory (14-point R30 advantage, documented September 2025). Persona customization (1.8–2.5x PCD multiple, documented August 2025–June 2026). Voice (session length approximately double text-only). Image generation (41% MSS vs 26% for non-image users). Each feature in the product roadmap produced a quantified, documented impact on the metrics that matter: retention, engagement, and revenue. The AI companion category is no longer making claims about its value proposition. It is reporting measured outcomes.
Demographics and Geography
Demographic composition reflects the March 2026 updated baseline: users aged 18–24 at ~28%, 25–34 at ~31%, 35 and older at ~41%. Geographic split: North America 36%, Europe 26%, Asia-Pacific 28%, other 10%. The Asia-Pacific share of new registrations continued trending upward in absolute terms.
The Month’s Defining Shift
The defining shift at 18 months is the combination of all four structural arguments simultaneously: scale, engagement depth, monetisation breadth, and feature-driven outcomes. No single number captures it. The 134% MAU growth says the market is real. The 19.6-point CEI gain says the engagement is durable. The 70% ARPU growth says the revenue is scaling. The documented feature multipliers say the product roadmap is working. The AI companion category in June 2026 is not a technology experiment. It is a category in the middle of its growth phase, with a data record long enough to prove it.
What We Are Watching in July 2026
- Series continuation: the AI Girlfriends Industry Index continues publication beyond this inaugural 18-month series. Edition 19 will cover July 2026 and will be the first edition of a new series cadence.
- Regulatory binding: whether any major jurisdiction passes binding AI-companion-specific legislation before the end of 2026.
- 50% VAR threshold: with voice adoption at 49% of paid subscribers, whether the July 2026 edition records majority voice adoption among paying users for the first time.
