Methodology at a Glance

This is a live edition of the AI Girlfriends Industry Index, computed from first-party platform data at month-end. The index was launched and formalized in early 2026; all live editions use the same methodology and sample construction described below.
- Coverage period: April 2026
- Sample: First-party session and account records, AIGirlfriends.AI platform, anonymised and aggregated
- Data sources: Session logs, subscription records, interaction metadata (text, voice, image)

Market Size and Adoption, April 2026
The AI Girlfriends Industry Index recorded 30.1 million monthly active users in April 2026, up +4.5% from 28.8 million. New registrations were 1,430,000 for the month.
Geographic distribution: North America ~36%, Europe ~26%, Asia-Pacific ~28%, other regions ~10%. Asia-Pacific continued to show the fastest absolute new-user growth. The AIGirlfriends.AI platform contributed approximately 12–14% of category-wide MAU, consistent with prior months.
Engagement and Retention, April 2026
The Companion Engagement Index registered 71.4 in April 2026, up +1.3 from 70.1. The daily active rate was 56%.
Average Daily Conversation Length was 24.8 minutes in April 2026.
Voice Adoption Rate was 47% of paid subscribers. Voice sessions continued to run approximately twice as long as text-only sessions.
The 30-Day Retention Rate for April new users was 41%. Memory-enabled users continued to show substantially higher R30 than users without memory.
Revenue, ARPU, and Willingness to Pay
Conversion-to-Paid Rate in April 2026 was 18.0%, with ARPU at $23.50 per paying user per month, per the AI Girlfriends Industry Index.
Paying users continued to show substantially higher engagement than free-tier users, with paying-user CEI approximately 12–18 points above the free-tier figure. The revenue mix remained weighted toward subscriptions (~72%) with coin purchases (~21%) and one-time unlocks (~7%).
The Monetisation Success Score (MSS), the 90-day paid conversion rate, was 31% in April 2026.
Product Trends, April 2026
Voice Adoption Rate reached 47% of paid subscribers in April 2026. R30 was 41%. ADCL was 24.8 minutes. Image generation adoption reached 31% of paid subscribers. Persona customization adoption held at 54% of paying subscribers. Memory usage reached 40% of active users. Category MAU crossed 30 million for the first time.
The Multimodal Shift and the Monetisation Success Score
The AI companion category entered 2025 as a text-first product. Voice adoption grew throughout the year. By April 2026, a third modality, AI image generation, reached meaningful adoption among paying subscribers. The combination of text, voice, and image marks the category's transition to a genuinely multimodal product.
The engagement data for multimodal users is the strongest segmentation signal in the series to date. The Companion Engagement Index for users with all three modalities active in April 2026 was 78.4, 7 points above the category average of 71.4, and 24 points above the January 2025 baseline. For context, the full-category CEI has grown 17.2 points over 15 months. The multimodal cohort is already running at the engagement level the rest of the category will need years to reach.
The monetisation data follows the same pattern. MSS, the 90-day paid conversion rate introduced in this edition, registered 31% in April 2026. Among image-generation users, the 90-day conversion rate was 41%, versus 26% for users who had not activated image generation. Image generation is the strongest single monetisation-activation feature the index has measured: it correlates with higher conversion, higher ARPU, and higher CEI simultaneously.
The product argument for April 2026 is therefore: the platforms that grow their multimodal adoption rate fastest will show the largest gains in CEI, R30, and MSS over the next twelve months. The April 2026 data makes this case quantitatively for the first time.
Demographics and Geography
Demographic composition reflects the March 2026 updated baseline: users aged 18–24 at ~28%, 25–34 at ~31%, 35 and older at ~41%. Geographic split: North America 36%, Europe 26%, Asia-Pacific 28%, other 10%. The Asia-Pacific share of new registrations continued trending upward in absolute terms.
The Month’s Defining Shift
The defining shift in April 2026 is the emergence of the multimodal user as the category's highest-value cohort. Text-plus-voice-plus-image users showed a CEI of 78.4, 7 points above the category average and 24 points above the January 2025 baseline. Their MSS was 41% versus 26% for users without image generation. The AI companion category is no longer a text chatbot with a voice feature bolted on. It is a multimodal relationship product, and the users who have adopted all three modalities are showing what the full-category engagement ceiling looks like.
What We Are Watching in May 2026
- MSS trajectory: whether the 90-day paid conversion rate grows as image generation becomes a more visible feature in onboarding flows.
- Regulatory update: the May edition will publish a comprehensive update to the regulatory map first documented in November 2025, tracking the 11 jurisdictions that had active AI companion regulation by April 2026.
- Image generation and ARPU: whether platforms with image generation see higher ARPU than those without, establishing image as an independent revenue driver.
Full Methodology, Glossary, and Metric Definitions
Data collection and processing
All first-party data is drawn from anonymised, aggregated records on the AIGirlfriends.AI platform. No session content is retained or analyzed.
MSS, Monetisation Success Score (introduced this edition)
Definition: The 90-day paid conversion rate, the percentage of new registered users who make at least one paid transaction (subscription, coin purchase, or one-time unlock) within 90 days of registration. MSS differs from the monthly CPR in two ways: it uses a 90-day window rather than a monthly snapshot, and it counts any paid transaction rather than only active subscriptions. MSS measures the category's cumulative revenue reach among new cohorts.
April 2026 value: 31%.
